Climatewalks by Climateflux is a data-driven and human-centered approach to community-based observation that engages citizens in collecting and analysing high-resolution microclimate data, supporting policy makers and urban practitioners to assess climate risk at the neighbourhood scale, and identify priority areas for intervention.

What are Climatewalks?

Organised as walking or biking tours, Climatewalks take into consideration both the objective and human experience of microclimate by collecting geo-referenced data from a portable weather station (the Climatewalks Backpack) as well as outdoor thermal comfort surveys.

The resulting data set offers a hyperlocal picture of microclimate conditions as experienced by participants on the ground, supporting decisionmakers to:

  • Assess climate risk at the neighbourhood scale
  • Identify priority areas for intervention
  • Develop climate adaptation strategies
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of adaptation initiatives

What can you use Climatewalks for?

Climatewalks address the need for evidence-based and inclusive climate action planning frameworks that meet the unique needs of each neighbourhood and its stakeholders.

Heat Adaptation Planning

Prepare, implement, and monitor local heat adaptation strategies by using Climatewalks to establish baseline heat risk, identify areas of high exposure and vulnerability, and validate the impact of heat mitigation measures.

Community Resilience Programmes

Build community resilience by using Climatewalks to raise awareness about heat exposure, measure the impact of heat stress on vulnerable populations, and co-develop strategies to reduce social and physical vulnerability.

Green Infrastructure Planning

Select strategic tree planting sites while demonstrating a commitment to citizen science by using Climatewalks to engage community members in identifying heat-stress points along an urban boulevard. Follow-up with additional Climatewalks to measure the impact of urban greening initiatives on microclimate conditions.

Active Mobility Planning

Use Climatewalks to assess climate-related barriers to active mobility, and validate remediation strategies along active transportation corridors and at key transit hubs.

Urban Microclimate Research

Leverage Climatewalks to study the correlation between urban morphology, microclimate, and outdoor thermal comfort.

Heat Safety Guidance for Outdoor Activities

Use Climatewalks to quantify heat stress levels for outdoor workers or around key tourist attractions or schoolyards.

The Climatewalks Backpack

A product of over 10 years of research and development, the Climatewalks Backpack is a portable weather station for collecting dynamic, high-resolution microclimate data. The device comes equipped with a range of sensors that report on the environmental conditions around the wearer at regular intervals.
